Located in the Oak Hill community of south Nashville, this unique abode is an arresting sight. Custom built by McPherson-Shaw, Inc., over 11 months in 2010, the house boasts an attractive fusion of design styles, providing interest at every angle. “I like to describe it as modern meets Asian meets Frank Lloyd Wright,” says Bob Shaw, president of McPherson-Shaw, Inc. “The team incorporated many very interesting textures and surfaces.” McPherson-Shaw has been constructing homes for more than 23 years and has built multiple times for Nashville-area home shows. For this particular residence, which was featured in Nashville’s First Charity Tour of Homes, Shaw served as general contractor, with Jim Nickle, architect; Amelie de Gaulle, interior designer; and Jill Fortuna, landscape architect rounding out the design team.

The group achieved a great feat with the modern jewel. Overlapping and intertwining angles dance around the exterior of the home. Large wooden beams flanking the front door, along with four-foot overhangs on the numerous eaves, hearken back to a classic Craftsman style and provide a wonderful blend of traditional elements and clean architectural lines. In a nod to other design styles, features like commercial storefront glass, copper rain chains and paned windows add to the character of the home.
“The varied windowpane sizes were an element of design and random uniformity,” says Shaw. “Random uniformity” perfectly describes the architectural and design ingredients of this structure as it meshes multiple ideas into a modern masterpiece.
